Two failure modes are common. Teams with fast pipelines and no security controls, where a dependency vulnerability reaches production unnoticed. I build or repair the delivery path — GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps — and integrate security scanning where it produces signal rather than noise: dependency and container scanning (Snyk, Trivy, DependencyTrack), static analysis (Semgrep, SonarQube), workflow auditing (zizmor), and findings management (DefectDojo). Secrets move out of pipeline variables and into proper management (HashiCorp Vault, cloud-native stores).
The measure of success is that the controls survive contact with daily development: builds stay fast, findings are triaged rather than ignored, and every release is traceable. In a recent engagement this setup eliminated manual release errors while cutting deployment time by roughly 40%.
